In my book One Last Experience I claim that the Hopkin party was held on 14 February 1969, and not on 13 February, as all other sources claim.

After careful research by Luigi and myself, we came to the conclusion that it was definitely held on 14 February. I have no idea why all other media have it as 13 February. I suppose someone published that date long ago, and – as with most incorrect information – all the later other publications copied that (incorrect) date, which is why it is now the general accepted date for the event. However, there doesn’t seem to be any proof of this assumption: no printed invitation has surfaced, no mention of the exact date in the press of that month.

There are several indications that the Hopkin event took place on the same day as the Disc & Music Echo Valentine’s Award event, which was held at the Seymour Hall in London. We know for sure that the Disc event took place on 14 February, because the Disc issue of 22 February wrote: “...but the highlight of Disc’s night with the stars – Valentine’s Night Poll Awards Ball last Friday [14 February]...”
Jimi Hendrix and Kathy Etchingham were present at both events. First the couple went to the Hopkin launch, and after that they went to the Disc event, which was only a mile down the road.


If we look at the photos of Jimi taken at those two parties (left the Hopkin party, right the Disc party), we see he’s wearing the exact same outfit. Although anything is possible, but Jimi was not the kind of person to wear the same outfit for two consecutive days.


The same goes for Mary Hopkin (left the Hopkin party, right the Disc party): she wears the same dress at both events. Very uncommon for any female singer to wear the same outfit for two consecutive days.


Another person who was at both events was radio DJ Kenny Everett (left the Hopkin party, right the Disc party); he can also be seen wearing the same outfit.


According to this website both Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker were at the Hopkin party, as well as the Disc party. (Personally I think Clapton and Baker were only at the Disc party – see photo above – and Hopkin is confusing the parties).
A learned friend wrote me in 2017: “Well done for being so sure! I checked with Mark Lewisohn [leading authority on The Beatles], who told me the Hopkin launch was on the 13th… but when I forwarded your email to him, he had a proper look and it turns out it WAS the 14th.”

So that, my children, is how it’s done.

I would like to say something in support of trade colleague Ed Thrasher, the art director of the original USA version of the Electric Ladyland album. I may get hate mail for doing this, but it is my opinion that Reprise made the right decision to overrule Jimi’s wish to put the photo of the JHE with the kids (now used for the 50th anniversary release) on the front cover of the album. If anything, the final front cover of the original LP has become an iconic image, which – to me – captures the mood of the “Voodoo Child” and the whole vibe of the album better than the kids photo. It stands out from a thousand miles. Thrasher used the photo without any text (except for the Reprise logo) with a stunning result. A wise decision, both artistically as well as commercially. Jimi, as a musician and performer, could have had ideas about the way the record had to be presented to the public, but art direction and marketing are a trade, which needs vision and many years of experience. Now, with the 50th anniversary release of this album, we can see that the kids cover has nowhere near the impact the original one has.

It seems there was no real plan for the cover in 1968, as Jimi’s instructions were made at the very last moment, perhaps a consequence of Chas Chandler not being in the seat anymore. A sign of this may be the fact that they used photos on the back and front of the ELL cover that were more than a year old. Talk about good management! The inside of the fold-out cover was done as Jimi had suggested (possibly a gesture from Reprise to meet the artist halfway): A frame of small photos, with the LP info in the white space in the centre. The frame of small photos is a nice concept, but frankly an obvious choice, and not one that has the same impact if compared to the inside cover of the UK ELL album, or even the inside of the UK Axis album. Reprise chose to print the inside of ELL in black & white only (Jimi wanted them mixed with color pics) but the end result is not very good, as the printing quality is inadequate.

Jimi didn’t like the UK cover of ELL, which is understandable, as the photography of the naked ladies is terrible, most people agree on this, then and now. But here again: it was all marketing by Track. The cover may not have been what the art director had in mind, but all the papers talked about it. At 2180 Broadway in New York City, on the corner of West 77th Street, until a few years ago you could find the Manhattan Diner.

In the ‘60s it used to be the Lighthouse, and Jimi Hendrix played there with the Squires together with Curtis Knight, Ace Hall, Ditto Edwards and sometimes Lonnie Youngblood. According to Ace Hall it was the Squires second gig after their debut at George’s Club 20 in Hackensack, NJ. As Ace reminisces Jimi was the absolute star, attracting all the girls first while their boyfriends were won over in their slipstream. The Squires made quite a name for themselves there. Photo expo to commemorate the Rotterdam gig the Experience did in 1967, as well as Jimi's 75th birthday. The Rotterdam Museum had big plans for an exposition (I was asked to participate) but since they started planning in July it was too late and it never materialized. That's a shame, because we had great plans for a nice mulit-media event at the museum. Do you know the thing when something is staring you in the face for decades, but you don’t see it? Last week I was bored and was watching the video of the 1969 Royal Albert Hall concert I went to. I suddenly realized that if I could figure out where my seat was in the hall, maybe I could spot myself in the audience. As it turns out, Jimi is in the middle of a direct line between me and the stage left camera. This I figured out by looking at the photos I took. I also noticed I was not that far away from the stage at all. While watching the video (with my bored head), I suddenly saw myself sitting the audience! Not only that, but I can be seen trougout the movie many times, watching the show, checking my surroundings, resting my tired head on my hand, holding my photo camera for a long time trying to catch that extra special moment, and even smoking a cigarette! (Not sure if that was allowed, but I suppose many others were doing the same?). It’s really strange to see myself sitting there after almost 50 years. And to think I’ve had that video for decades, but never realized I’m included in the footage. Can’t wait to see the movie being released soon!

American Standard [see photo] was formed in Denver, Colorado during the winter of 1967. When, in 1967, local promoter Barry Fey opened his Family Dog venue at 1601 West Evans Avenue in Denver with the help of San Francisco rock impresario Chet Helms. Fey recalls selling out the Fieldhouse's 4,700 tickets and that Hendrix was "incredible." Afterwards, according to Fey's long-time assistant Leslie Gorham Haseman, Jimi moved on to the Family Dog venue to jam. 'It was kind of a private party, but anyone who wanted to play got up and played with him, including Tommy Bolin," she remembers. French friend Yazid Manou contacted me this week. I got to know Yazid in 1990 when he organized the “Jimi’s Back” festival at the Olympia in Paris. He wrote: “Hi Ben. A French guy called JP Perkins said he played as opening act for The Experience on October, 9th 1967. He wasn't in The Pebbles and I

didn't know another band (maybe) played before the Belgium band. That's a new mystery for me! He also said a photographer took a picture of him with the Experience backstage!” In return I sent Yazid a picture of a mystery guest who was photographed backstage with the Experience by Jean-Pierre Leloir. As it turned out it was this JP Perkins! Yazid continued: “The guy was signed under the name PERKINS. Barclay just found some English studio musicians to put him at Olympia for 4 songs.”

Leslie Perrin, who handled Jimi Hendrix’s British PR: “Jimi was dressed in mauve trousers, a wide-brimmed brown-topped black hat with brass-ringed holes with matching mauve material woven in and out. He had brass buckled shoes, a flowered shirt and a metalworked waistcoat...” Perrin was wearing a grey business suit, white shirt and a tie embroidered with the insignia of the ancient Fleet Street journalists’ club. Lynn Goldsmith: “Through Iggy’s [Iggy Pop] connection to Russ Gibb, or “Uncle Russ,” as he was called, we got a gig to be one of the opening acts there. Russ was a major player in the Motor City music scene. He’d been a high school teacher and local radio DJ. Now he owned the Grande. We weren’t very good, which is probably why he had us open for the opening act. After one gig, we went to a party in someone’s apartment. I was wearing a fedora that I wore in the Walking Wounded poster. It had a band I’d made from the circular chrome rings of my belt. Looking unique back then was a sure sign you were an artist. As I entered the dark room where music was blasting, I could see a hookah pipe being passed around. Sitting in the corner, to my utter astonishment, was rock god Jimi Hendrix. He nodded for me to come over and sit down. He whispered in my ear that he liked what I’d done to my hat. I took it off and gave it to him. He smiled, or I should say grinned. It was a sly look, like the Cheshire cat in Alice in Wonderland. It scared me. I was a virgin. I was afraid he’d find out I was not cool. I left the party. I never knew till years later when I saw Baron Wolman’s photograph of Jimi on the cover of Rolling Stone that he actually wore my belt on his hat.”

You know the thing where something is staring you in the face all the time, but you don’t see it? That happened to me with this ‘case’. Much has been speculated about the photos at the top of this blog. When and where were they taken? Steve Rodham (editor of the UK fanzine Jimpress) and I talked about this on many occasions, but with very little to go on, we have not come to a final verdict on the location, or a date for that matter.

So Luigi and I were discussing the dates of the above photo sessions, one in a studio and one at Jimi's Upper Berkeley Street flat. One would get migraine from doing the research, which I did. The end solution came from a good friend, who supplied additional information which abled me to date these two sessions for once and for all. As of today the jimihendrix-lifelines.net website makes a restart.
Basically we go back to the old donations system. That means that you get access to the ‘donors only’ area by making a chosen donation, preferably in monthly intervals.
There are some changes if compared to the old website:
✭ Your starting point is always the Lifelines home page. Here you will find a new blog, which has the latest news, new found photos, and shows updates of what’s new in the donors’ area. In the right hand column you will find a menu which links to the available time periods.
✭ The ‘free’ section of the website is a condensed version of what’s in the donors’ area, with only the highlights of Jimi’s whereabouts on any particular date. Extensive stories and many photos in the donors area as usual. Example of a ‘free’ page here.
